Happy Birthday my sweet Nick

Family self-portrait of Nick turning 2. Don't tell Elvis only one ear and eye made it!

2 years old? My baby boy is 2 already? No way! But then again, watching him run around like a madman, count to 5, tell me my PJs are "rojo" and dancing along to any song he hears, well, it does seem pretty far away from that day two years ago when he rocked our world in the most awesome way possible.

Here is a little video from our morning as we kicked off Nick's birthday. We gave him a train activity table with a wooden train. Later in the morning, Nick and I headed to the library for storytime. After his 2 year check-up with the doc, we met Jay at Lupe Tortilla for birthday dinner and then headed to his school to for a little Halloween party.

We are gearing up for his big party on Saturday and then Halloween evening! Stay tuned!

Thanks for joining us on this wild, fun ride:)

Rock the Cradle for Johnny Romano!

Julie Romano, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, X-Games gold winner, Mike Romano
Me, Julie and Rhonda workin' it!
On Saturday, October 24th, Houston's Jamail Skate Park hosted the 2nd annual "Rock the Cradle for Johnny Romano", Texas' only World Cup skate competition. All proceeds benefit the JohnnyKicksCancer Foundation.
The weather and vibe both set the stage for a great day. While I am a complete skating novice and found myself trying to sell T-shirts to apparent skating royalty, I was quickly schooled in the basics.
At the end of the day, the JohnnyKicksCancer Foundation raised more than $15,0000! Now, in my mind, that's "catching big air"!

Cabo Wabo

Nick and Jay at the Sky Pool. Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, Los Cabos, Mexico
Dinner with the Driskills at The Office, Los Cabos
Tropical Storm Patricia joining us...

Excuse me, October. What's the rush? Why are you moving by me so quickly?

So far though, we have had a super busy and fun October. Last week, we were fortunate enough to spend some time down in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with our wonderful friends, the Driskills. They have a timeshare there at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach (great place!) and also a son a little older than Nick. The weather was a little uncooperative with Tropical Storm Patricia looming in the Pacific, but we still managed to have a great time. Not even Nick's ear infection at the beginning of the trip held us back to much although it did make for a rough plane ride to Cabo. Melissa and I enjoyed an AWESOME spa day and the guys found their own fun going out in town in the evenings. Apparently, Cabo Wabo was especially fun!

33 is gonna be good to me!

Last week, on September 30th, I turned 33. With such a great husband and friends, it was bound to be a great little celebration! Jay gave me an absolutely GORGEOUS watch and then we celebrated with our friends in the Dove (Dove Manor is our neighborhood), by going out to dinner on Saturday. Dinner turned into drinks in a rooftop cabana which turned into some SERIOUS dancing at Americas in The Woodlands. As I step into 33, I'm feeling a ton of gratitude for my life and the people in it. I've been working on refocusing myself physically, mentally and spiritually and I'm committed to continuing down this path this year. My uncle told me once we undergo major changes every 7 years. May sound crazy, but I think I can see that, feel that now.

September 23, 2009
One year ago today, Johnny Romano, 10, lost his battle to Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Today, we invite you to join us as we continue to fight against childhood leukemia in Johnny’s name.
It gives me great pleasure to formally announce the JohnnyKicksCancer Foundation and newly launched website:
www.JohnnyKicksCancer.org

· Learn more about childhood leukemia

· Donate to JohnnyKicksCancer

· Find upcoming skate and surf events benefiting JohnnyKicksCancer and Make-a-Wish

· Buy the latest Johnny Romano decks, shirts, shoes and wheels

Our hearts still ache knowing we will never see Johnny skate again. When people hear childhood leukemia is ‘common’, they assume there is a cure. There is not yet a cure for the most common childhood cancer, leukemia.
Common Does Not Equal Cured.
Together, we can ensure JohnnyKicksCancer as we continue the fight in his name. Join me.

Today, Nick started his first day of school! He is enrolled twice a week at a great Mother's Day Out program. If all goes well, he will continue at this school until Kindergarten - which seems eons away, but considering how quickly the past 22 months have flown by, I know it will be upon us more quickly than I can imagine. It is truly a privilege, especially in today's economy, to able to stay home with Nick. On most days, it's a blessing I wouldn't trade for any paycheck, title or perk of my former life. And then on other days.....well, those days I'll take a job at the 7/11 for a break from 24/7 Mommyhood. School for Nick twice a week seems like a much better option than making slushies at the 7/11!
Dropping Nick off this morning went really well. No tears...well, none from Nick. I had a moment. Mainly because I know that this is the first step of giving him over to the world - with all the joy and heartbreak that comes with it. I know, I know...you are screaming..."Get a grip! It's Mother's Day Out!". But hey, it's my baby and this is my blog;)

Random summer pics

Nick is so much fun. He still loves music and will tell me which songs he wants on the radio. He has also discovered "The Wiggles"...they sing alot...and grooves along to them.
Here's a few random photos of Nick. Hope you enjoy!

Welcome Ryan Marie Byrd!

August 8, 2009 was a day to circle for our family! Not only did Nik get married, but that morning Laura gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Ryan Marie Byrd.
Laura has two boys and had been dreaming of her girl so we join her in her excitement over welcoming her daughter.
We were going to meet our niece last week, but as you can imagine the exhaustion of parents with three children under the age of four, they asked us to reschedule and we happily obliged.
As soon as I have pics of our newest girl, I'll be sure to post. Congrats Byrd family!

Goin' to the chapel.....

Disclaimer - I don't have one good picture of Nik & John's wedding since I was in it and Jay was chasing Nick. As soon as I have link to the photographer's photos, I will post it.

On August 8, my little sister, Nikki, became John Scully's wife. I have literally never seen a more beautiful or happier bride in my life! Nikki and John have known each other since high school and have been dating for 4 1/2 years, so it was quite a celebration.
Jay, Nick and I flew up to Chicago on Thursday and joined my parents, brother Austin, his girlfriend and several family members from Costa Rica in a house we rented in Wrigleyville. We kicked off the wedding weekend by making dinner, opening gifts and hanging out with our Costa Rican family Thursday night. It was like the relative calm before the wedding madness! Jay was a good sport since he had to take care of Nick while I ran around Chicago helping my sister.
The rehearsal dinner on Friday night was held at a Chicago staple, Giordanos Pizza. There was a great, casual vibe as everybody started getting excited for the next day's festivities. Roopa, one of the bridesmaids, put together a slideshow of Nikki and John which was the absolute show stealer.
Saturday was nuts.
Wedding day is always crazy and we were also working with the challenges that A)Nikki is the only person in the family that knows the way around Chicago and B) my dad was driving a rented 12 person passenger van. Let's just say it made for some stressful moments.
Nikki and John rented a trolley to take us, the wedding party, from the hotel, through Chicago for pictures and to the church. We had a great time and I can't wait to see the crazy pictures.
As for my Nick, well, he did his best, but it was difficult for him. He's a schedule kid and we basically laughed at the schedule during the wedding weekend. He DID make it up the aisle at the church....along with his "wubbie", a pacifier and holding Jay's hand.
The reception was held at Germania Place, near Lake Shore Drive and continued the beauty, joy and celebratory mood of the weekend. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. John Scully!

What do you mean, "It's almost August"?

Seriously, this summer has flown by at record speed. I feel like I just got used to it being July and somehow my calendar is telling me it's almost time to flip again. Really, August? Already?
I can't complain, though. We have filled our summer with many fun memories, trips and time spent with friends and family.
Let's see...July...
We celebrated the 4th of July by participating in the neighborhood parade - mental note: wagon needs to be thoroughly decorated on July 3rd to refrain from pre-parade chaos. My one ribbon was a poor showing, but having just arrived from Costa Rica the night before, I was only 25% mentally there myself. After naps, we headed to a pool party at Jen & John Taylor's house...in the Dove, of course. Nick showed off his dance moves as he stayed hydrated....

This month, our niece, Lillyanna (Jason's sister, Allison's daughter), turned 4 years old. Allison celebrated with a cute party at a place called the Pink Pokka Dot (no, I'm not a bad speller, that's really the name of this place). Anyway, it's mostly geared toward little girls with dress-up, mani/pedis and little girl makeovers followed by pizza, cake and a "dance party". Here's a picture of Nick trying to figure out whether or not the crown is edible, Lilly in her Princess dress and Sarah (Toni's daughter) in her crown.
My sister, Nikki, is on the final countdown before walking down the aisle on August 8th in Chicago. Of course, before making it legal, we had to make it fun! I joined Nik's closest friends for a weekend in Lake Geneva, WI, just about an hour north of Chicago. It was a fabulous weekend with some great stories, copious amounts of wine, a wedding shower lunch and a Saturday night bachelorette party. The only downer is that summer apparently skipped Wisconsin this year and it was WAY too cold to hang out by the pools or the lake.

Back from Playa, on to Austin, then Costa Rica...

Ok, so I'm still talking about June. It was a big month for us....tons o fun!
We got back from Playa...ahhhh, Playa.... on Monday, my sweet, wonderful parents left on Tuesday (after all, my Mom had a plane to catch to Costa Rica on Wednesday, gimp foot and all) and then on Friday we headed out to Austin. Friday night we spent with our dear friends Will, Laura and Kennedy (or KiKi, as Nick calls her) Thomson. We love the Thomsons. Not only did we love Will and Laura before babies, but now that our babies are close in age, it's even more fun. It's not often in life when a friendship works out the way it has for the Thomson/Romano clans. Will and Jay have known each other since they were kids. When Will met and married Laura, she and I were immediate friends....it was just one of those things. The guys couldn't be happier:) Now, with the kids just 4 months apart, the fun is on fire!
As much as we love the Thomsons, the real reason we went to Austin was for Chris Burke's surprise 40th birthday party. Kim, Chris's wife, definitely worked hard to keep the golf tourney plus party at the Salt Lick a surprise. Unfortunately, she couldn't do anything about the weather.

Let me put it to you this way. It was so EFFFIN" hot, the devil went north.

Chris Burke needs to know he has great friends who played golf in literally, 105 degree heat. I picked up a very pregnant and beautiful Amanda Walker and we met the boys at the Salt Lick. Nick was oblivious to the heat and only wanted to be near the music...outside. Ugh.
As a mother, I think the kid is cute, but it was really fun having so many people stop me and tell me how dang cute he is! It was even funnier when friends of Jay, who had not met me, stopped me and said.."You must be Romano's wife, because THAT is his kid." I get it..I was an incubator.

On to Costa Rica!
I had not planned on going to Costa Rica. But sometimes life moves you in different ways than planned. I love my grandmother more than I can express and for reasons that we don't have space here to describe. As I examined our year of travels, I realized that being a mom in a young family, all of your time is ahead of you. As the matriarch of a family, most of your time is behind you. At the end of the day, I knew I would never forgive myself if I didn't take Nick to hang out with my mother and my grandmother in Costa Rica. And that's what we did....just hang out with my family. It was beautiful and calm. One day I will tell you about my grandmother. She is literally the strongest woman I know.
Now, I will also tell you that was the last time Nick travels on my lap on a full flight. Somewhere between the AC going out on the 30 minute delay on the tarmac and Nick screaming for 2 hours and then throwing in the air the potato salad, I really contemplated asking the flight attendent for a drink. Thankfully, he fell asleep for the last 45 minutes, and let me assure you, if I could have figured out how, while Nick was asleep in my arms, to reach for the $5 in my bag to buy myself a cocktail, I totally would have. Instead, I just sat back and tried to remember what the heck I was going to put on his wagon for the 4th of July parade.

So I'm a little behind..let's start with Playa

Son of a gun (as my dear friend Kristine would say), June is over and I didn't keep you faithful three readers up to date on all that has happened.
Rats.
First of all, there was Playa. AHHH....moment of silence for the brilliance that Eliana had when she threw out the idea of taking the Dove on road. For those of you not "in the know", the "Dove" refers to my neighborhood gang (no guns, just toddlers, parents and cocktails kind of gang). Our section of the hood is "Dove Manor". We've since referred to ourselves as the Dove. Before you throw up a little bit in your mouth, understand that when you have a bunch of kids and a bunch of adults who were fun in a prior life, you improvise. We have great parties, get-togethers and the occassional "Bachelorette" or "Real Housewives" watching parties. Anyway, we took the fun on the road with a vacation to Playa del Carmen earlier this month. Eight couples, a beautiful location and less swine flu than Houston made for one of the best vacations of my adult life. We relaxed, had some fun and came back planning the next field trip. Now, that's friendship:)
Of course, my INCREDIBLE parents were kind enough to come down and watch Nick while we went on vacation. Unfortunatly, my mom fell down the stairs the morning of her trip. Being the trooper she is, she got a wheelchair and showed up. Damn. Noone loves you like your mama. Thankfully, "Papa", my dad was her sidekick, and together they had a great time surviving the record Houston heat.

Down on the farm

Here are a few pictures from Dominic's 2nd birthday party yesterday. It was literally the cutest backyard party I've ever been to! The entire backyard was transformed into a fun little farm for the kids. Schanen and Jon Ray even had entertainment for the kids! There was a singer there and Nick was all about the music. He just sat there completely jamming with the music. Too funny! I know I say it over and over, but we just LOVE our neighborhood and all of our friends here. In fact, on Thursday, we'll be taking a neighborhood field trip to Playa del Carmen. Thank God for grandparents.

At the car wash...Nick 19 months...Jay 36 years!

We had a great weekend celebrating Jay's 36 birthday on Friday the 29th and just hanging out with Nick. Nick turned 19 months on May 28 and is busier and more fun each day. His vocabulary is growing by leaps and bounds. Now, he'll blow you a kiss (besitos), waves bye-bye to EVERY car, plane or human that goes by the house, loves to say "uh-oh" when he perceives problems and will clap and say "did it" when he is proud of himself. He still loves being outside, picking up rocks, leaves and the occasional frog. (UGH!)
When our friends Will and Laura Thomson, and their daughter Kennedy, visited us over Memorial Day weekend, Nick was totally enamored with them. He walked around looking for them saying "Lala" (Laura) and "Kiki" (Kennedy).
Continuing Jay's birthday celebration, we had brunch with Jay's family on Saturday morning. Jay and I had a nice steak dinner the weekend before with some friends to celebrate. (I dig birthdays and feel they should be sufficiently observed:)
Here are a few pictures from this weekend with Nick helping Jay wash the cars - Jay's, mine and, don't forget, Nick's car too!
Next up, is our vacation to Playa del Carmen. My parents arrive on June 10 to take care of Nick and Elvis. Yay for summer!!

Holla for your Mama

Being a daughter and being a Mom.....two of my favorite titles in the world.
Happy Mother's Day!

A few videos...

Sorry we have been MIA! It seems like the days are passing even faster, if that's possible. On April 28, Nick turned 18 months. He's still a little hunk, weighing in at 30 lbs! He is all over the place, talking all day long. Lately, he LOVES being outside, wearing our shoes and watering the grass, plants or anything else around him. Unfortunately, for us, he's also discovered the word "no". Yikes.

Here are a couple videos to see Nick in action. Enjoy!

Easter ROCK Hunt

Happy (belated) Easter everyone! We had a great weekend full of crawfish, cupcakes and Easter egg hunts. Well, better stated, Easter ROCK hunts. Nick could have cared less about the eggs. He was going for something more substantial and long-lasting: ROCKS!

Enjoy the video...

Spring in the suburbs

People say they could never live in Houston because of the weather. You won't hear me say I love summer in Texas BUT...the trade off for the asinine humidity from June - September is the pretty reasonable weather the other 8 months of the year.
Nick is learning to love the outside too. His new favorite pastime is watering the trees with Daddy. Considering we already have sprinklers, the only issue we have with his new love is the water bill. Oh well, if you could see how happy it makes him, you would write the check too.....

Oh wow, Mama

Nick is now 17 months old and full of new skills. Every day is adding new words, new dances (that's how we know he needs to watch Happy Feet) and making us laugh out loud as he chases down Elvis, hides wooden bowls on the dining room chairs or spends as much time as possible outside.

On the other hand, one of his new "skills" was not as thrilling to me. Although, everyone else seems to have found it hilarious.

On Saturday I heard him playing in his crib after his nap. He seemed pretty happy so I let him play for awhile. When I walked into his room, it took a moment for my eyes and brain to process what I saw. There was Nick, in all his happy glory, naked from the waist down. He had taken off his pants AND diaper and was having a great time painting this crib, wall and self in, you got it, POO.

Just so we're clear, we had also been to a birthday party that morning so it was ice cream, cake and pizza poo. Take a big whiff of that! What followed was an all-at-once motion of: baby in the bath, dog in the yard (no need for him to get curious), sheets in the sanitizing wash, Clorox wipes ALL OVER EVERYTHING. And....a Saturday afternoon Dos XX for Mommy.
The best part - when I walked in Nick had one of his self-made masterpieces in his HAND and just looked at me and said, "Oh, wow, Mama. Oh, wow."

Same thing he said as he ran around at our last visit to The Children's Museum! Don't worry, the following pictures are ONLY of the Museum visit. By the way, the newly renovated and expanded Children's Museum is really amazing. We became members and plan on spending a good amount of time there. Hopefully, that will mean less "discovery time" in the crib.

It's a zoo out there...

On Friday, Jay and I took Nick to the zoo for the first time. Nick had a great time running around the petting zoo and almost touching the goats. He would run right up to the goats and then put out his hand like he was going to pet them and then....syke! They seemed like bigger sized Elvises, but my little observer wasn't 100% convinced he should be bothering them too much. Other party favorites included the elephant, lion and giraffe.
We are planning on making zoo trips pretty frequently - especially since you can bring your own food - it's a great little trip.
This week we are going to hit the Children's Museum!

Oh Wow! Ojos, nariz and bellies...

Nick's new favorite phrase is "Oh wow!" and he's been using it alot lately with all his new discoveries including:

"ojos" - eyes, "nariz" - nose, and belly. I'm not sure why I didn't start teaching him belly in Spanish first, but here we are, with belly in English, so I'm sticking with it.

Here's a short little video of Nick showing off his new finds. If you are in arm's reach, he will likely tell you where your ojos, nariz and belly are too. As you'll see in the video, he's also a BIG fan of taking everything out of the kitchen cabinets at least 62 times a day. Who needs toys when you have pots, pans, various plastic containers and big wooden spoons!

A good stick in the mud

Grandpa died today.
He fell down, had a heart attack, and left this world just the way he wanted to...an old man, with a full life, loving family and still able to tell you what he was doing in 1932, 1968 or 2009. Still able to get around, albeit with the help of a walker, and most importantly, not in a hospital. He was a tremendous man.
I just need to write some of my favorite stories or memories about him because, even at 32, I realize memories get fuzzy, buried and sometimes forgotten, and when I'm in my 90s I still want to be able to clearly tell the story of what it was like to be Dick Young's granddaughter.

When I was a kid, about the age in this picture and for some years later, I loved to sit in his lap and ask him to take out his teeth. I thought THAT was the coolest trick I person could pull. I distinctly remember when my first tooth fell out I was very pleased thinking I was that much closer to my own fake bunch of teeth. He would also kindly let me stare at amazement at his "belly". Understand he was in his early 60s and certainly did not have a belly, but hey, I was a kid.

His pipe. I can't remember exactly when Gramps stopped smoking his pipe, but anytime I'm in a cigar/tobacco shop the smell brings me back to the safety of being a child on the farm. I'm almost waiting for Grandma to appear and tell me to go get a cookie.

The story about when he came back from World War II. He was in a train with a fellow soldier - a black man - and he wanted to share his bottle of booze with the black man. Someone on the train said the soldier had to go to another car and my grandfather certainly couldn't share his booze with the returning soldier. Grandpa let those ignorant people know that this man would sit with him and he could share his drink with whomever he chose.

Going through the woods and watching the crops grow. Two party favorites of Gramps. On a recent trip home, maybe two years ago, Grandpa was definitely slowing down and everyone was talking about it. Of course, we were all sitting under the tree and Gramps turned to me and said "Rin (he and Grams always say "Rin" not "Ren"), let's go for a ride." I could tell others were a little nervous - plus I think I was pregnant - but off we went. We rode through the woods and he pointed out everything I'd seen all my years growing up, but this time I enjoyed it so much more. That day he told me more stories while we sat under the tree - the Prohibition "runs", the man who paid with $100 bill at a bar during the Depression years, so much, so much.

When Jason met Grandpa and Grandma, he fell in love with them too. On a vacation up north one year we went to Chicago, then drove to my Grandparents house then on to Cincy. My grandparents were so happy we were there. Of course we would be there! It turned out to be one of my favorite visits of all time. Grandpa told Jason how he and my Grandma were at the game when Joe DiMaggio's hit streak ended. It was a game against the Cleveland Indians in 1941. Jason, being the sports maniac he is, promptly asked, "Do you still have the ticket?".
No, he didn't, but I think my Grandpa was having so much fun recalling sports stories with Jay. Those two were peas in a pod and spent a great deal of time talking about sports, jobs and my inability to cook. Jason's very favorite question to ask my grandpa...
Jason - "Gramps, what do you think of the (Cleveland) Browns?"
Gramps - "They're a bunch of bums! Dirty bums!" (Always said with the same defiant enthusiasm.)

I am so blessed he was my Gramps. I like to think he was proud of me. Even during my wilder years, he believed in me and I could feel it. I feel great comfort knowing that he met and loved Jason and Nick. And even greater comfort that he and my beloved Abuelo are up there watching over us, undoubtedly sharing a scotch and water (Gramps) and whisky (Abuelo) and finally speaking the same language.

My grandmother, my father, his brothers and sister have an deeper well of memories and love to draw on. When I go home on Saturday I want to be there for them, because even though we all know Gramps is free, happy and FINALLY able to hear everyone, it is us that will still be wishing we could listen to him once more.

It's Rodeo Time in Houston!

Yee-haw...it's rodeo time in Houston! If you are not from Texas, I realize how difficult it may be to imagine how rodeo time could be so exciting. Especially when it's me who is excited and the closest I've been to lifestock is a delicious steak and I'm not exactly a cowgirl.
This year we had fun with Nick on Friday evening at "Go Texan" day in The Woodlands. Next year we will definitely dress him up head to toe for the event. This year, he had a good time cruising through the area, checking out the animals and dancing to the band. And eating. The kid is always eating.
Saturday, February 28, Jay and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary. As I do every year, I put on my wedding dress and we watched our wedding video. On Saturday night, we went to the Patron party at the Rodeo BBQ Cook-off with Wes and Toni and then stayed the night at Hotel ZaZa. Let me tell you, there's nothing like drinking Platinum Patron to put you in celebratory mood! We had a great time dancing, eating delicious BBQ and enjoying some fabulous Patron cocktails. Thank you Wes and Toni!
